from Scenes from Childhood Theodor Kullak
Op 81, No. 3
Here we are back at the time of year for gathering together and storytelling!
This short piece by Theodor Kullak is a wonderful example of, "program music," a style of composition in which the composer purposefully seeks to illustrate specific images, ideas, feelings or atmosphere through the music itself. The key of D minor (perfect for creating a spooky mood,) along with the changing dynamics between 'piano' (soft) and 'forte' (loud) suggest the whispered and hushed tones, as well as the surprise moments and suspense of Grandmother's ghostly tale! There are several ways for you to engage with this piece, whether that's learning and playing for yourself, (sheetmusic attached,) or drawing or painting images brought to mind from the music? You could try writing your own lyrics to accompany the catchy phrases, (Ex: "We gathered 'round Grandmother's chair to hear her tell the eerie tale...")
Or how about creating your own,
and directing a dramatic presentation or silent film!
The possibilities are endless!
